Ghost River State Natural Area

Trade a busy afternoon for a little time beside the Wolf River. Ghost River protects a landscape of bottomland forest, cypress-tupelo swamp, and open marsh, with opportunities to watch birds and other wildlife.

For an outing on foot, look into the Mineral Slough loop trail and boardwalk off Beasley Road. Paddlers can explore the marked canoe trail between Yager Road and Bateman Road. The river’s winding channels call for advance planning, so check the official access information and current conditions before setting out.

Ames Plantation’s Heritage Village

Continue the history beyond Woodlawn with a visit to Ames Plantation’s collection of restored buildings. The Heritage Village traces the area’s architectural heritage from around 1820 into the early 20th century.

Its buildings include a 19th-century farmstead, the Stencil House, a one-room schoolhouse, and a cotton interpretive center in a restored log cabin. Visits are by appointment, not casual drop-in tours. Contact Ames Plantation ahead of your trip to arrange a visit and confirm availability.
