The Woodlawn story
Built in 1828. Still making impressions.
A Greek Revival home with a long view of Tennessee history.

Woodlawn, La Grange, TN - 1828
The early years.
Major Charles Michie, a veteran of the War of 1812, built Woodlawn in 1828 on land connected to his military service. The Greek Revival house was chosen for its prominent setting and broad view of the landscape.
The house changed hands in 1875, when Dr. J. J. Pulliam purchased it from Mrs. Olivia Michie Winston. Dr. Pulliam practiced medicine from an office at Woodlawn for many years.

Civil War era
A witness to a pivotal chapter.
During the Federal occupation of La Grange in 1862, Woodlawn became the Western Tennessee headquarters for General William T. Sherman. It was also used as an emergency hospital during the war.
